Sonko takes NEDP grassroots campaign to Westlands

Sonko addressed residents during the tour, saying he was visiting Nairobi’s 17 constituencies to hear directly from residents and assess challenges facing communities.

The former governor also used the tour to promote the party’s proposed economic empowerment programme, which targets youth, women and community groups.

Sonko said NEDP plans to support the revival of grassroots groups and encourage them to undertake income-generating activities, although details on the scope and financing of the programme remain unclear.

The Westlands tour is part of a wider campaign by Sonko to build a grassroots network across the capital. In recent days, he has visited Fuata Nyayo and Marigoini in South B, where he spoke about reviving youth and women’s groups under the party’s **“Uchumi Bora, Nguvu Yetu”** campaign.

“Nairobi is my bedroom. This is the place that has made me, and this is the place that I should help to grow economically and development-wise. Through our party, NEDP, we shall do that,” Sonko said during the South B visit.

Sonko said the party would focus on helping residents organise around economic activities and access opportunities aimed at improving household incomes.

The former governor has pledged to take the initiative to all 17 constituencies, with youth and women among the groups expected to be targeted.

The tours come as NEDP steps up its political activities in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 polls. Sonko has sought to distinguish the party through an agenda centred on economic empowerment and development, while also holding consultations with political and grassroots leaders.

The former governor's latest mobilisation drive marks an early attempt by NEDP to establish a stronger grassroots base in the capital, where Sonko served as governor between 2017 and 2019.

With the constituency tours continuing, the party is expected to face the challenge of translating its economic messaging into concrete programmes as it seeks to build support ahead of the elections.
