Sonko calls for better pay and legal protection for domestic workers

The delegation was led by Madam P, who is known for linking domestic workers with prospective employers in Nairobi's Kilimani area. During the meeting, she also declared her intention to contest the Kileleshwa Ward MCA seat on the NEDP Party ticket.

Addressing the delegation, Sonko urged greater respect and dignity for domestic workers, arguing that they play a critical role in supporting Kenyan households and should be fairly compensated and protected from exploitation.

He said the party was renewing its campaign to promote the recognition of domestic workers, proposing that they be referred to as "House Managers" instead of terms such as "maids" or "house girls" to better reflect the responsibilities they undertake in managing households.

The delegation outlined a range of challenges facing domestic workers, including sexual harassment, exploitation, poor working conditions, low wages and inadequate legal protection. They also called for greater appreciation of the contribution domestic workers make to families and the country's economy.

Sonko described domestic workers as indispensable to many households, saying their efforts often go unnoticed despite the essential services they provide.

"They are essential members of our families and deserve appreciation, empowerment and protection," he said.

The former Nairobi Governor pledged to continue advocating for policies and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of domestic workers through better working conditions, fair remuneration and stronger legal safeguards.

Also present at the meeting were NEDP Deputy Party Leader Antony Manyara and the party's Legal Officer, Sammy Musyimi.

Sonko also congratulated Madam P on her decision to seek elective office, saying her candidature could help amplify the concerns of domestic workers in leadership and policymaking.

He concluded by calling for a society in which all workers, regardless of their occupation, are treated with dignity, respect and afforded equal opportunities.
