Somalia’s factory boom opens new market for Kenyan firms

Somalia’s growing manufacturing sector is creating new opportunities for Kenyan businesses to supply machinery, raw materials, technology and technical expertise, even as increased local production could gradually reduce demand for imported finished goods.
The shift is changing the Kenya-Somalia trade relationship,
traditionally dominated by Kenyan exports of manufactured and consumer products
to the Somali market.
The trend was highlighted by the double recognition of
Shakir Group at the seventh Somali Business Awards. Shakir General Trading was
named Best General Trading Company of the Year, while Shakir Foam Factory won
the Best Foam Factory of the Year award.
The recognition reflects the growing diversification of
Somalia’s private sector, with businesses traditionally focused on imports and
distribution increasingly investing in local production.
For Kenyan firms, this presents an opportunity to supply
Somali manufacturers with industrial inputs, including machinery, spare parts,
chemicals, packaging materials and engineering services.
Shakir Group chief executive Abdiaziz Ali Ahmed said the
awards reflected the company’s progress and the confidence of its customers and
partners.
“We are honored to receive these two national recognitions.
They reflect the dedication of our teams, the trust of our customers and the
support of our partners.”
Ahmed said the recognition would encourage further
investment in Somalia.
“For us, these awards are not simply a celebration of what
we have achieved; they are a responsibility to continue improving, investing
and building businesses that create lasting value for Somalia.”
Much of Kenya’s trade with Somalia moves through the Port of
Mombasa and road corridors linking the two countries, giving Kenyan suppliers
established routes into the Somali market.
The growth of local manufacturing could eventually increase competition for Kenyan producers of foam, plastics, construction materials and other manufactured goods.
However, Somali factories will also require
equipment, raw materials and technical services, creating new markets for
Kenyan companies.
