Somalia witnesses surge in hair transplants

For decades, individuals seeking advanced hair restoration procedures often travelled thousands of kilometres to destinations such as Turkey, India and the United Arab Emirates.
Today, however, Somalia is emerging as an unlikely but
increasingly popular destination for hair transplant procedures, signaling a
growing shift in the region’s healthcare landscape.
The rise in demand for hair restoration services reflects
changing attitudes towards cosmetic healthcare, improved access to specialized
treatment and growing awareness about the psychological impact of hair loss.
Medical practitioners note that hair loss affects millions
of people globally, with causes ranging from genetics and hormonal changes to
stress, ageing, nutritional deficiencies and certain medical conditions.
In Somalia, the sector has experienced significant growth
over the past few years, driven by the emergence of modern clinics offering
internationally recognized procedures that were previously unavailable within
the country.
As a result, many Somalis who once sought treatment abroad
are increasingly opting for local solutions, while some patients from
neighbouring countries are beginning to consider Somalia as a viable treatment
destination.
Industry observers attribute the growing popularity of hair
transplantation to improved technology, shorter recovery periods and more
natural-looking results than those achieved through earlier techniques.
According to a clinic in Somalia, hair restoration is no
longer viewed merely as a cosmetic procedure but as an important intervention
that can positively affect an individual’s self-esteem and overall wellbeing.
"Hair transplantation has evolved significantly over
the years and now offers natural, long-lasting results for people experiencing
hair loss. Patients are increasingly choosing to undergo treatment locally
because they receive personalized care, easier follow-up support and access to
modern technology comparable to what is available internationally," said a
spokesperson from a clinic.
The spokesperson added that the patient experience has
improved considerably due to advances in minimally invasive procedures, skilled
specialists and comprehensive post-transplant care programmes that support
long-term success.
As demand for hair restoration continues to rise across East
Africa, Somalia is steadily positioning itself as a regional hub for
specialized hair transplant services, offering patients quality care closer to
home while contributing to the country's expanding private healthcare sector.
