A new air link
between Nairobi and Kenya’s North Coast is now in operation after Skyward
Airlines and Vipingo Ridge launched direct flights to Vipingo, a move expected
to boost tourism and investment in Kilifi County.
The inaugural
flight departed Nairobi on Friday, marking the start of twice-weekly services
to the Vipingo Ridge Airstrip.
The route is
designed to offer faster and more convenient access to the Coast for tourists,
homeowners, investors, golfers and business travellers.
Officials said the
connection will reduce travel time to the area while supporting domestic
tourism and local enterprises.
Vipingo Ridge
Chief Executive Officer Alex Horsey said the new service would open up more
opportunities for the region by making it easier for visitors and investors to
reach the destination.
“This year, as Vipingo Ridge
celebrates 20 years as one of Kenya’s premier golf and lifestyle destinations,
we stand to benefit greatly from improved accessibility. The new route also
makes it easier to host conferences, sporting events and support our residential
developments by reducing travel time and enhancing convenience,” he said.
Skyward Airlines
CEO Diana Nyambura said the route forms part of the airline’s broader strategy
to expand its network based on customer demand and regional growth.
“This partnership goes beyond
launching a new destination, it is about reshaping how travellers access the
North Coast,” said Ms. Nyambura.
“Vipingo Ridge offers a uniquely
positioned airstrip that allows us to serve both an exclusive residential
community and the wider coastal ecosystem. As Skyward Airlines continues to
grow its fleet, destinations and service offering, this route exemplifies our
commitment to smart connectivity, reliability and an elevated travel
experience.”
With flights now
operating twice a week, stakeholders say the route is set to strengthen
connectivity between the capital and the Coast while reinforcing Kilifi’s
position as a key tourism and investment hub.
