Six suspects arrested over Catholic priest's killing in Elgeyo Marakwet

Police have arrested six suspects linked to the shocking Thursday murder of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett, a Catholic priest from St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, who was gunned down by unknown assailants in Kabartile Village, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

According to a press statement released by the National Police Service (NPS), Father Bett was ambushed and fatally shot in Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-Location.

The attackers reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident, prompting an urgent manhunt by General Service Unit (GSU) officers.

“Six suspects have since been arrested and are currently in custody,” read the statement signed by NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.

The police were quick to clarify that the killing was not linked to cattle rustling or the rampant banditry that has plagued parts of the North Rift region.

While investigations are still ongoing, authorities have condemned the killing as a “heinous act” and assured the public of their commitment to ensuring that justice is served.

"The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Father Bett, as well as to the parishioners of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish," said the statement.

The NPS also urged residents in the area to remain calm and go about their daily lives without fear, while encouraging anyone with information to come forward through toll-free hotlines or anonymously.
