The death toll on Kenyan roads continues to climb, with six people killed in two separate road crashes in Makueni and Nakuru counties, raising fresh concerns over road safety ahead of the December festivities.

In one incident, four people were burnt beyond recognition after two trucks collided and burst into flames along the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway in Makueni.

Thick smoke and flames engulfed two trucks after a collision at Kiunduani Town in Makueni along the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway.

The Sunday afternoon crash claimed four lives, including two truck drivers, a woman, and her child who were travelling in one of the trucks. Police say the four were burnt beyond recognition.

In Nakuru County, two people died after a private car collided with a truck at Soysambu in Gilgil along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

Police say the car was heading towards Nakuru, while the truck was travelling in the opposite direction towards Nairobi.

Two other occupants of the car survived the collision and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

The two crashes add to the growing number of road accident fatalities reported across the country this year.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has directed traffic officers to strictly enforce road safety regulations and urged motorists to observe traffic rules during the festive season.

"Wakati wa hii msimu ya sikukuu, ningetaka watu wote wakuwe waangalifu kwa barabara zetu. Take care of the other road users. Nikimalizia kabisa, the duty of the police and other security providers is the prevention of crime. Kitu inaitwa ulevi, illicit brews, lazima tuondoe," stated Kanja.

Kanja also called for a crackdown on illicit brews and drug abuse, stating that the vices have been linked to rising crime and reckless behaviour that often contributes to road carnage.
