Head coach Kevin Wambua has entrusted the leadership mantle to co-captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati, blending experience and tactical awareness ahead of the high-stakes tournament set for April 17–19, 2026.
The duo will spearhead Kenya’s campaign in what has already been dubbed the “Group of Death,” with Shujaa drawn against rugby sevens powerhouses Australia, New Zealand, and the USA Eagles in Pool C.
The squad features a crucial tactical boost with the return of seasoned scrum-half Brian Tanga, who replaces the injured Chrisant Ojwang. Tanga’s comeback carries added significance, marking a decade since his debut in Hong Kong, and he is expected to bring composure and leadership in pressure moments.
Among the standout names is Patrick Odongo, the electric Daystar Falcons winger who finished as Kenya’s top try scorer in 2025.
He is joined by experienced campaigners like Vincent Onyala, known for his defensive steel, and Kevin Wekesa, a powerful forward and 2025 IOC Climate Action Award winner.
The squad also carries a sense of legacy, with Gabriel Ayimba cintinuing to solidify his selection chances and continuing the rich rugby heritage of his late father, Benjamin Ayimba
Other key players include John Okoth, Dennis Abukuse, Nygel Amaitsa, Festus Shiasi, Floyd Wabwire, David Nyagige, and Vincent Onyala, forming a balanced unit capable of both explosive attack and disciplined defense.
This Hong Kong leg marks the first of three crucial World Championship events, alongside Valladolid and Bordeaux.
A top-eight finish across the series will secure Shujaa’s promotion back to the prestigious HSBC SVNS top tier in 2027.
Adding to the excitement, this year’s tournament will be held at the newly unveiled Kai Tak Sports Stadium, ushering in a new era for one of rugby’s most iconic events.
