Shujaa  began their Hong Kong Sevens campaign with a 14-5 defeat to Australia Sevens in a Pool C clash that highlighted early defensive lapses but also moments of promise.

Australia made a blistering start, with Josh Turner crossing over for the opening try before James Turner added a second soon after.

Both tries stemmed from Kenya’s defensive gaps on the wings, as Australia stretched play wide and punished Shujaa’s spacing. Dietrich Roache converted both efforts to hand Australia a commanding 14-0 lead at halftime.

Shujaa had a moment of real opportunity in the first half when Daystar Falcons forward Patrick Odongo powered over the line. However, celebrations were cut short after a TMO review ruled the try out for a knock-on in the build-up — a crucial setback that denied Kenya early momentum.

In the second half, Kenya showed improved structure and intent, gradually growing into the match with better phases of play and territorial pressure.

Their persistence was eventually rewarded when Denis Abukuse, earning his first starting berth, crashed over for Shujaa’s only try of the game. The conversion attempt by Nigel Amaitsa was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 14-5.

The result reflects the broader challenge for teams stepping up from Division 2, as they continue to adjust to the pace and precision of top-tier opposition.

Shujaa will now turn their attention to a tough follow-up fixture against New Zealand Sevens at 3:47 PM EAT , where a sharper defensive display will be key to keeping their hopes alive in the quest for promotion back to the top tier.
