Shujaa can win main cup in Hong Kong- Oliech

Kenya Rugby Sevens team Shujaa has set eyes on the top prize in the Hong Kong Sevens of the HSBC World Series to be played this weekend, targeting one more before concluding the season.

Shujaa on Wednesday morning pressed on the rehearsal peddle further in Hong Kong, two days before their opener against Canada on Friday.

Speaking to Citizen Digital  from the South Eastern China city, flyer Samuel Oliech exuded confidence that Shujaa can win ‘one or two of the remaining four legs’ of the season.

“Definitely our target is to win a main cup this season, if possible two which basing on our recent outings, is a realistic target.

“We just need to keep working harder  and keep our standards high as we progress with the series,” told Oliech.

The Resolution Impala Saracens flyer was Kenya’s top player in the last outing in Vancouver with 24 points, finishing 17th in the list of top 30 players.

Currently, Oliech is the leading Kenyan player on the chart of most points scored after six rounds of the series, tallying a total of 105.

Reflecting on his performance this season, Oliech believes that the country has enough talent to challenge any rugby powerhouse in the globe.

“We have players, a lot of good young players, we just need to identify and nature them to get where other experienced ones are. The current crop is doing well to inspire the upcoming players, and we are always determined to do the best. That is the spirit here,” noted Oliech.

Gold Coast assignment

With the Commonwealth Games coming a week after the Hong Kong Sevens, Oliech says it’s time to ignite the team for the Gold Coast assignment.

“We should concentrate with both the series and the Commonwealth Games and go for the best. Our performance here should be a motivation factor ahead of the Games, so we want to shine here and shine more in Gold Coast,” concluded Oliech.

Shujaa currently sits eighth in the log with 64 points after six rounds, having finished second in the last Vancouver leg.
