Audio By Vocalize
Speaking on this week’s episode of She Means Business, Koome reflected on the experiences captured in her book Courting Courage, offering insights into the values, setbacks, and milestones that have shaped her path to the country’s highest judicial office.
At the heart of her story is her upbringing and the influence of her mother, Gaake, whom she credits for instilling in her the principles of hard work, faith, and the transformative power of education. These early lessons, she noted, became the foundation upon which she built her career.
Koome also shared her experience of balancing work and family life, having gotten married at the age of 22 while pursuing her professional ambitions. She emphasized that achieving balance is a continuous journey, one that requires intentionality and support systems.
A pivotal moment in her career came when she failed in her first attempt to secure the position of Deputy Chief Justice. Rather than deterring her, the setback reinforced her resolve. She described the experience as a lesson in perseverance, underscoring the importance of not giving up even in the face of disappointment. Her persistence would later culminate in her historic appointment as Kenya’s Chief Justice.
Beyond her personal journey, Koome addressed broader national issues, particularly the fight against corruption. She stressed that the responsibility does not lie solely with institutions but with every citizen, calling for collective action to drive meaningful change.
She also expressed gratitude to Kenyans for their continued support during her tenure, acknowledging the trust placed in her office.
Looking ahead, Koome outlined her vision for a Judiciary that is accessible, responsive, and firmly rooted in serving the people. She emphasized the need to demystify the justice system and ensure it is not perceived as distant or inaccessible, but as a vital institution that works for all.
