The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has declared Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Samuel Atandi as the MP-elect of Alego Usonga Constituency, Siaya County.

According to IEBC, Atandi garnered 69,129 votes to retain his seat after 86,413 area residents cast their votes at the ballot on Tuesday.

George Omondi Muluan (DAP-K) came second in the race with 14,624 votes while independent candidate Sospeter Opondo was third with 2,079 votes.

Joseph Mukwanah Ochieng, another Independent candidate, managed a distant fourth place after garnering 581 votes during the exercise.

Despite the number of registered voters in the constituency being 122,009, only 86,413 people availed themselves at the ballot according to IEBC; this translates to a 71 per cent voter turn-out rate.

The commission further stated that 546 votes were rejected in the vote tallying exercise.
