In a statement shared on his official X account following a meeting with leaders from Wajir, Mandera and Garissa counties at the Wajir State Lodge, the President said the government is implementing transformative projects worth hundreds of billions of shillings to unlock the region's economic potential.
Among the initiatives is the construction of the Isiolo-Mandera road under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, which is expected to cost more than KSh100 billion. According to the President, the road will improve connectivity across the region, facilitate trade and create new economic opportunities for local communities.
Ruto also revealed that the 500-kilometre Lamu-Garissa-Isiolo road is now halfway complete and remains on course for completion next year. He said the project is expected to enhance transport links between northern and coastal Kenya while opening up the region to increased commerce and investment.
The President further disclosed that the government is investing more than Ksh
45 billion in affordable housing projects across Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties. He described the programme as one of the largest public housing investments ever undertaken in the region since Kenya attained independence.
In the aviation sector, Ruto said the ongoing expansion of Garissa Airport is nearing completion, while plans are underway to upgrade Wajir Airport at a cost of Ksh.700 million. The improvements are expected to boost air transport connectivity and support economic activities in the region.
The President said the projects form part of the government's broader strategy to ensure equitable development across the country and address decades of marginalisation that have historically affected Northern Kenya.
"Our commitment remains steadfast in ensuring that every part of Kenya, including Northern Kenya, receives its fair share of development and opportunities for prosperity," Ruto said..
