Ruto scraps 'watchman' label, raises PSO wages 15 percent

Speaking on Thursday at State House Nairobi during a meeting with the PSO’s, Ruto affirmed that the government has made strides to implement the Private Security Regulation Act 2016 aimed at transforming the sector into a professional and globally competitive industry.

The President noted that the PSO’s are just like any other worker and they deserve to be appreciated and respected just like other professions likening their work to that of the Police Service. 

“Names such as watchman, guard I agree are demeaning names and because of that, through your suggestions, I know those terminologies are still in our laws and regulations with the government.

 I am instructing all government agencies to expunge reference to private security officers as watchmen or guards”  said the President. 

The Head of State said that references made to them in the general wages order, private security order and private security regulations order will all be changed to comply with his directive.

Additionally, the President acknowledged that private security guards play a crucial in the economy by protecting various industries that represent different sectors in the country. 

During the meeting, Ruto called for a collaboration between the Private Security Officers and the National Police Service through a joint framework to collectively ensure that the country has proper security structures.  The President noted that the PSO’S handles first hand information  making them invaluable.

In his remarks, the President promised change in the regulations to accommodate progression of paths for the PSO’s and also lawful remuneration by their employers. Also, the President announced an increase of 15 percent  of the minimum wage from its initial value.

The President warned Private Security companies to comply with the set minimum wage requirements saying that failure to do so is a breach of the constitution of Kenya.
