President William Ruto has announced plans to establish an ultra-modern Rescue centre in Homa Bay County to facilitate the response towards water accidents and security concerns along Lake Victoria.
According to Ruto, the government has set aside Ksh.250 million for the construction and equipping of the facility to help in responding to accidents which may involve the fishermen and water transport users.
Speaking at Agoro Sare Senior School in Kasipul constituency, Homa Bay County, Ruto said the government is keen on utilising Lake Victoria as a viable resource that acts as a life-changer for many Kenyans through fishing activities and transport services.
The Head of State argued that it is the responsibility of the government to protect Lake Victoria and its users by providing essential facilities such as rescue centres.
He also pledged the purchase of rescue motorboats that would cost Ksh.70 million for patrolling the lake with an aim of responding to emergencies and accident cases.
The president noted that people lose their lives in the waters due to a lack of proper equipment and facilities to help save lives.
Apart from blue economy development, President Ruto also defended the implementation of the affordable housing plans, where Homa Bay County is set to benefit from units worth Ksh.17 billion, which will be set up in various towns.
