Nairobi businesswoman Rose Wanja has paid tribute to the late Senior Assistant Inspector General Lazarus Simiyu Opicho, remembering him as a mentor and trusted friend who played a significant role in shaping her professional journey.

In her farewell message, Wanja recalled meeting Opicho at the National Defence University-Kenya, where their relationship developed into a close friendship that gave her opportunities to interact with senior government officials and other dignitaries.

She said Opicho mentored her in security awareness, protocol, professionalism and leadership, while teaching her how to navigate difficult situations through calmness, effective communication and an understanding of people's concerns.

“He mentored me on security awareness, protocol, professionalism and leadership, while teaching me how to handle difficult situations through calmness, effective communication and understanding people's concerns,” Wanja said.

Wanja also recalled the lighter moments of their friendship, particularly Opicho's frequent calls asking her to book flights to Kitale, a destination he enjoyed visiting.

She said their last conversation involved a request for assistance in securing a seat on a Skyward Express flight to Kitale. During the call, Opicho also shared the location of his new office along Mbagathi Road.

Wanja said she did not know that the conversation would be their last.

“General, I will never forget your calls, your laughter, your encouragement and the doors you opened for me,” she said.

She expressed sorrow that Opicho had made his final journey home without making his usual call to her, reflecting on the personal bond they had built over time.

Wanja extended her condolences to Opicho's family and colleagues in the National Police Service, joining those mourning his death.
