Robert Okaka of Kenya delivered a commanding
performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Preliminaries
– Round of 16 booking his place in the Men’s 80kg (Light Heavyweight) quarterfinals.
Okaka boxed with confidence, discipline and control
throughout the contest, winning every round on the scorecards and earning a
unanimous 5-0 decision from all five judges over Tanzanian Yusuf Lucasi
Changalawa.
He now heads into the quarter-final Showdown where
he will face Australian Paul Trainor. This is a crucial contest for Team Kenya
because a victory over Trainor will guarantee Robert Okaka at least a
Commonwealth Games bronze medal, as both losing semi-finalists receive bronze
medals in the boxing competition.
Meanwhile captain Boniface Mogunde bowed out of the
Men’s 70kg boxing competition after a spirited performance against Scotland’s
Sonny Kerr in the Round of 16 at the SEC Centre, Glasgow.
Maina faced a determined home boxer and, despite giving his all in the ring, lost by a 3–0 unanimous points decision (WP).
The
victory sees Sonny Kerr progress to the quarter-finals, while Maina’s campaign
comes to an end in the Round of 16.
Although the result did not go Kenya’s way, Boniface
Maina Mogunde represented the nation with courage, determination, and
sportsmanship on one of the Commonwealth’s biggest sporting stages.
He joins 33-year-old Amina Martha who lost 5-0 to
20-year-old English prospect Lauren Mackie in the women's 54kg Round of 32 last
Friday.
Kenyan lightweight boxer Rosemarion Achieng Otieno
has not yet competed but is scheduled to fight today, July 28, 2026, in the
afternoon session at the 2026 Glasgow
Commonwealth Games.
Having received a favorable opening-round bye, she
advanced directly into the Quarter-Finals of the Women's 60kg division against
Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh of Canada.
