Kenya’s Robert Froggen-Richard is preparing to make history as the country’s first triathlete to compete at the Youth Olympic Games, with the 17-year-old set to represent the nation at the Dakar 2026 Games in Senegal.

His selection marks a significant milestone for Kenyan triathlon, offering an opportunity to raise the sport’s profile and inspire more young athletes to take up the demanding discipline of swimming, cycling and running.

Froggen-Richard began training in triathlon alongside his mother at around the age of 11. His interest grew after competing in his first triathlon in Kilifi about two years ago, setting him on a path towards the international stage.

“I am personally very honoured to have been chosen to represent Kenya. It has been a tough journey, but I am grateful to my coaches, my family and everyone who has supported me along the way,” he said.

The teenager has set an ambitious target of completing the sprint-distance triathlon in under 58 minutes. He recently recorded a personal best of 59 minutes and 46 seconds, giving him a benchmark as preparations intensify.

“My goal for the Youth Olympic Games is to go under 58 minutes. A top-ten finish would make me very happy, and I want to use this experience to build towards future competitions,” he added.

Preparing for the expected hot conditions in Senegal has also been a priority, with his training programme incorporating heat adaptation alongside sessions in all three disciplines.

His coach, Abdallah Mansoor Abdallah, an International Triathlon Union-certified coach, has praised the teenager’s discipline and commitment, describing his selection as a major achievement for both the athlete and the coaching team.

“Robert is a very disciplined and dedicated athlete. When we have swimming, cycling or running sessions, he is always ready to work. He wants this opportunity, and that makes the coaching process much easier,” Abdallah said.

The coach identified swimming as the main area requiring improvement, explaining that the team is working to help Froggen-Richard emerge from the water closer to the leading competitors. Kenyan swimmer Iqbal Bayusuf has also been brought in to support his development in the pool.

Abdallah said Froggen-Richard’s cycling and running performances compare favourably with those of athletes he regularly competes against, providing encouragement ahead of the Games.

However, the coach called for greater sponsorship and investment in young triathletes, noting the significant costs associated with equipment, maintenance and training. Access to suitable facilities is another challenge, with Froggen-Richard pointing to the lack of a track in Mombasa as one of the obstacles in his preparations.

“Triathlon is not an easy sport for young athletes, but the earlier they start, the better. If we can identify and nurture more athletes from an early age, Kenya will have greater opportunities to qualify more competitors for future Youth Olympic Games and other international competitions,” Abdallah said.

For Froggen-Richard, the Dakar Games represent more than an individual milestone. His participation could help introduce more young Kenyans to triathlon while laying the foundation for a career on the international stage.

As he prepares for his historic debut, the teenager is urging aspiring athletes to remain consistent even when training becomes difficult, emphasizing the importance of discipline and a strong mindset in achieving long-term goals.
