Residents of Munyu village in Gatuanyaga Ward, Thika Town Constituency, have raised concerns over the continued use of salty and highly alkaline water in the area.

Led by Wambui Mburu, the locals said they rely on water from nearby boreholes, which they claim has affected their health and daily lives.

They alleged that many residents, especially children and adults, have developed discoloured teeth due to prolonged consumption of the water.

“Look at my teeth, they have changed from white to yellowish. Even when cooking, the water produces foam in food because of its condition,” Wambui told Citizen Digital.

Another resident, Anthony Ndachi, said it has taken too long for the relevant water service providers to connect clean and safe water to thousands of households in the area.

He called on local leaders and water agencies to prioritize service delivery and ensure residents access safe drinking water.

The residents spoke during a free medical camp held at St Maria Madalene Catholic Church, where at least 1,000 elderly people received medical attention and prescribed medication.

Doctor Esther Wanjiku, who participated in the outreach programme, revealed that many patients were suffering from high blood pressure and cold-related illnesses.

The medical camp was sponsored by FAK Foundation in conjunction with other stakeholders.

Speaking after the event, David Omusi urged well-wishers to support the elderly, noting that they play a key role in promoting unity within families.

Nun Irene Nyawira also appealed to Kenyans living in urban areas to regularly check on and support their elderly parents back home.
