Residents back push to rename Kiangoma village, church and school

Residents of Kiangoma Village in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County, have backed a proposal by area MP George Kariuki, popularly known as GK, to change the name of the village, church and school, saying it carries a negative connotation.
The residents, led by Peter Kariuki, said Kiangoma, a Kikuyu word meaning “madness,” has subjected them to ridicule, particularly whenever incidents occur in the area.
“Even the village is called Kiangoma, and the church and the school. We need all Kiangoma names changed,” said Joseph Mwangi.
Peter Kinyua said residents often face mockery when bad incidents are reported in the village.
The residents said they preferred names associated with positive meanings, citing neighbouring villages such as Kiangai, which means God, as well as Kibirigwi, Nguguini and Kiburu.
They welcomed the MP’s proposal to give the new secondary school, whose two-storey building is under construction, a different name.
Speaking at Kibirigwi grounds near Kiangoma Village, MP George Kariuki said the new school would not be registered as Kiangoma Secondary School and asked residents to suggest an alternative name.
“I want us to change the name of the school. As we register the school, we will not call it Kiangoma Secondary School. I will not call it Kiangoma. It is you who will give me the name. What do you want us to call it?” he asked.
The MP said the school, which is being constructed using Ksh25 million from the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), should reflect the investment made in its facilities.
“I have built it with NG-CDF funds, Ksh25 million, then called Kiangoma? No,” he said.
