World Marathon record holder Sebastien Sawe has dedicated Sunday’s victory at the London Marathon, which saw set a new marathon world record, to the late Kelvin Kiptum who died in February 2024 in a tragic road crash.
Speaking after
breaking the marathon record in the London Marathon in a time of 1 hour 59minutes,
and30 seconds, Sawe said Kiptum was a role model to many and that he inspired
him to run.
“He [Kelvin
Kiptum] inspired many to work hard and break the record. From the hard work he put in and the discipline
he had I am sure he is proud of what I have done,” said Sawe.
Sawe had
targeted Kiptum's world record in Berlin last September, when he went through
halfway in 60:16 minutes, before that bid was ultimately undone by the hot weather.
He now says Sunday’s win was down to hard work and dedication.
“…Results are a
product of hard work that I had put in in training; it is not easy but through discipline
and dedication the dream has come to pass,” added Sawe.
The record
holder Sawe, who has won all four marathons he has contested has sought to
ensure confidence in his performances by undergoing frequent drug tests and was
tested 25 times before competing in Berlin, where he faded to finish in
2:02:16.
“I have
struggled with some injuries but that did not make me give up on my dream, I am
happy it has come to pass and I believe more will come in future,” stated the
world marathon record holder.
