Disability rights advocate Hafid Maalim Ibrahim is among Kenyans recognised by the National Heroes Council for his contribution to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs), particularly in Northern Kenya.

Ibrahim, who chairs the PWDs in the Northern Kenya region, was featured in the council’s list of honourees for his role in advocating for the inclusion and representation of persons with disabilities.

The council credited him with playing a pivotal role in the enactment of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, which provides for equal access to education, employment and political participation in both the public and private sectors.

The recognition comes as Kenya continues to implement measures aimed at promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and expanding their participation in public life.

Ibrahim was among 242 Kenyans proposed for national recognition during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations held on October 20.

He also holds the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW), a presidential honour conferred during the 2025 Jamhuri Day celebrations in recognition of his contribution to society.

Beyond disability rights advocacy, Ibrahim is seeking to enter elective politics, having expressed interest in contesting the Mandera senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

His bid is expected to focus on inclusive leadership, disability rights and the representation of marginalised communities in governance and public decision-making.
