While National League champions Kenya Pipeline and KCB Women’s Volleyball Club are busy strengthening their squads, Prisons have signed only young centre player Celestine Machuma from sister club Nairobi Prisons.
Barasa, a former assistant coach of the Kenya women’s national team, the Malkia Strikers, said the club’s recruitment is closely tied to Kenya Prisons Service recruitment, which is currently not taking place.
“We are not busy in the market. Our recruitment depends largely on Kenya Prisons Service recruitment, and there is no recruitment expected soon after the pass-out parade in February. We therefore have no choice but to depend on the current squad.
“As much as I would like young players to be part of the team to ensure a smooth transition, I don’t have the flexibility to do so at the moment. But it’s all good,” Barasa said.
Machuma, who impressed for Nairobi Prisons in both the National League and Kenya Cup, has been brought in to strengthen the centre position.
“Machuma was impressive for the club in both the National League and Kenya Cup, and I felt it was right to bring her on board. She is a young player who has shown growth and will be useful in the centre position. I’m happy to have her,” Barasa added.
The coach is also delighted to see Prisons return to the African Clubs Championship after securing qualification through their performance in the domestic league.
“We qualified for the Club Championship on merit after finishing second in the League play-offs. We are excited to return after missing last year’s edition in Egypt.
“We are keen to make our mark on the continental stage. It is always an honour to represent the country, and it also gives our players an opportunity to showcase their talent,” Barasa said.
KCB and Pipeline represented Kenya at last year’s African Clubs Championship. The Bankers finished runners-up to Egyptian champions Al Ahly, while Pipeline claimed third place.
Prisons made an encouraging start to their pre-season by winning the NSSF KAVC International Volleyball Tournament in Kampala, Uganda. They defeated hosts Kampala Capital Authority (KCCA) 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17) in the final.
Barasa believes the tournament provided a valuable foundation as the team prepares for the new season and a return to continental competition.
However, with former national team captain Brackcides Agala retiring in July after an illustrious 20-year career, Prisons face the challenge of reshaping their squad while maintaining their competitive edge.
