President Ruto set to officiate Ksh.12bn Mombasa SEZ project

The Gulfcap Group is chaired by businessman Suleiman Shahbal, who is also an MP at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The agreement, which represents an investment of more than US$100 million, will be signed at State House, Nairobi today, marking a major milestone in efforts to establish a large-scale industrial hub at the Coast.

According to Gulfcap Group, the project is expected to create 7,972 direct jobs, with additional employment and business opportunities expected to emerge around the development.

“This is a first of its kind project. It’s something that I have chased over the past 15 years and finally today we have achieved it. I am delighted because of the impact this project will have on Mombasa's economy,” said Mr Shahbal ahead of the launch. 

The proposed SEZ, which will occupy about 535 acres in Jomvu, is expected to attract companies involved in manufacturing, logistics, exports and other sectors.

67 companies are expected to set base at the SEZ.

DP World is one of the world’s leading logistics and supply chain companies. Headquartered in Dubai, the company operates ports, free zones, and logistics hubs in more than 70 countries.

It plays a key role in facilitating global trade and has invested in major infrastructure projects across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

The investment is valued at more than 100 million dollars (Ksh.12 billion) and is projected to create 7,972 direct jobs.

The SEZ will be established on a 535-acre parcel of land in Jomvu Sub-County, which was previously used as a cattle staging ground by the Kenya Meat Commission.
