President Ruto departs to Zambia for Hichilema inauguration

President Hichilema, 64, won in a race critics said was tightly managed by his government securing 60 per cent of the votes cast on August 13, defeating 13 challengers.

President Ruto earlier lauded Hichilema's victory, saying it will anchor his "visionary leadership" towards developing the nation.

He added that the victory will strengthen bilateral ties between Zambia and Kenya and will expand cooperation between the two States.

"Kenya holds its relations with the Republic of Zambia in high esteem. Over the years, our two countries have fostered deep and enduring cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels," he noted in his congratulatory message.

In his victory speech, Hichilema vowed to work for the citizens and dedicate his presidency to advancing the development and growth of the nation. 

He has been in power since 2021.

However, 55-year-old Brian Mundubile — a first-time presidential contender who came second with 38 per cent of the vote —  has been charged with treason.

The top opposition leader's arrest has deepened concerns over the government's treatment of political dissent.

Police accuse him, alongside his running mate Makebi Zulu, of posing a national security threat after security forces raided his home a day after the vote and said they found rifles and other military equipment.

The pair have denied the allegations, dismissing claims of an armed insurgency as fabricated.
