President William Ruto has footed the hospital bill for Mukami Kimathi, wife to celebrated Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi.

This is after Mukami's family appealed to wellwishers for donations to clear a  Ksh.1,045,883 bill that barred her from leaving the premise.

According to reports, the 101-year-old was admitted to a city hospital on January 5, 2023, with pneumonia symptoms and thereafter discharged on January 12.

The matter was brought to the attention of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who on Sunday vowed to help the family go back home with their loved one.

"On my return to Nairobi later today,  I will make time to visit our mother to check on her progress and assess possible interventions to make her life more comfortable," he wrote on Twitter.

Later Sunday evening, DP Gachagua visited Ms. Kimathi and confirmed that President Ruto has cleared the bill.

"H.E President @WilliamsRuto has cleared the Hospital Bill; Thank you, President William Ruto, for coming through for Mukami Kimathi and her family. You are a true and genuine friend of our people. Be blessed abundantly. Always," he Tweeted.

The country's second-in-command was flanked by his wife Dorcas Rigathi and other members.
