Pomp and color as Legacy Academy returns after historic Gothia Cup triumph in Sweden

Legacy Football Academy's historic Gothia Cup-winning Under-14 team received a heroes' welcome at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday, 20 July, after returning from Sweden, two days after becoming the first East African side to win the prestigious youth tournament's Boys Under-14 Play-off A title.

Family members, academy officials, and football enthusiasts turned up to celebrate the young stars, who capped off a memorable week in Gothenburg by defeating Swedish side Lerums IS 1-0 in Saturday's final at SKF Arena.

The victory completed a flawless campaign in which Legacy won all nine of their matches, scored 33 goals, and conceded only two.

Christian Amani was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Boys Under-14 category.

"It has been a beautiful trip. The games were not easy, but we did our best. We scored many goals, and I was awarded as the MVP. I thank Legacy Academy for this opportunity. It has helped me build my career," Amani said.

For head coach Derrick Ochieng Otieno, the triumph was a story of redemption after his side fell short in last year's semi-finals.

"It has been a successful trip. We went with five teams, and out of the five teams, U14, which is the one that I am leading, scored 33 goals and conceded only three, and we came home with the MVP award.

This time, we were very optimistic, and it got to the players' heads, and they believed they could do it. Last year, they lost in the semis, and this year it was all about redemption,” he said.

The coach praised his players for believing in themselves and said the historic success would serve as a springboard for greater achievements.

"I am very happy when I see how the players have fought for this, and we came home with a trophy. In the next few years, I know we are going from one level to another," he added.

Legacy's title-winning campaign was built on complete dominance from the opening day of the tournament.

Drawn in Group 13, the Kenyan side defeated IF Centern Vit 4-0 before thrashing Solängens BK 7-1. They followed that up with a commanding 7-0 victory over IFK Nyköping 1 before completing the group stage with a 3-0 win over Virestad IF to advance with a perfect record.

The Under-14 side maintained the same intensity in the knockout rounds. They beat IF Centern Blå 2-0 in the Round of 16 before eliminating Nyköpings BI 3-0 in the Round of Eight. A 3-1 victory over Argentina's CEF 18 Tucumán in the quarter-finals sent them into the last four, where they comfortably dispatched Ghana's ProGen FC 3-0 to book a place in the final against Lerums IS.

David Jesse Adama's solitary goal in Saturday's final proved enough to hand Legacy the trophy and write a new chapter in East African football history. The academy became the first team from the region to lift a Play-off A title in the Boys Under-14 category at the Gothia Cup, widely regarded as the world's largest youth football tournament.

Legacy's success was not limited to the Under-14 side, with several of the academy's teams also enjoying impressive campaigns in Sweden.

The Under-13 team topped their group after registering four wins, one draw, and one defeat, with Brivon Nyandika, Jack Weko, and Gavin Okech leading the scoring charts.
