Police officer sustains severe injuries after suspect attacked him during arrest

The chaotic scene unfolded in Butula, when a contingent of officers from the Bumala Police Station rushed to reinforce their colleagues at the Murumba Police Post.

The combined team was attempting to apprehend 36-year-old Stephen Ouma Okinda, a fugitive who had been on the run since assaulting his father last week.

Okinda had previously evaded capture on September 23rd by wielding a panga and threatening the lives of responding officers.

When the police cornered Okinda to finally execute the arrest, the suspect launched a ferocious panga attack against the officers. 

Police Constable Voustine Atinya bore the brunt of the onslaught, sustaining two deep, critical cuts to the left side of his head.

In the life-threatening melee that followed, the police opened fire to protect themselves and subdue the violent suspect.

During the struggle, Okinda managed to hack a G3 rifle, held by one of the officers, into two pieces.

Despite his fierce resistance, the suspect was ultimately overpowered by the officers and placed in custody at Bumala Police Station, where he faces multiple charges.
