A police officer was shot dead on Thursday afternoon by an armed assailant in Thika West, Kiambu County.

According to a police report, Police Constable Bernard Koome was fatally wounded during a routine security patrol in the Cravers area. Koome and a colleague had spotted a suspicious motorcycle and attempted to intercept it when the rider abandoned the bike and fled on foot, firing indiscriminately.

“In the process, he shot PC Bernard Koome in the neck. Officers pursued the suspect, who continued firing into the air while fleeing,” the report stated.

A subsequent search of the scene led to the recovery of two spent 9mm cartridges and a CZ pistol magazine loaded with four rounds of 9mm ammunition.

PC Koome was rushed to a hospital in Thika but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the assailant, and investigations are ongoing.
