Detectives in Embakasi village have arrested a man suspected of being part of a criminal gang that allegedly targets people withdrawing money from banks by posing as traffic police officers.

The suspect, identified as Muia Mutune, also known as Fredrick Mbuta, was arrested following intelligence-led investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Operation Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB).

According to the DCI, the gang members allegedly fake being traffic officers, where they stop and rob victims shortly after they withdraw cash from banks.

The investigators said intelligence gathering and forensic analysis helped identify four suspects believed to be linked to the reported robberies, with Mutune being one of them.

According to the DCI, this is not the first time Mutune has been arrested. He had previously been arrested in April 2026 over similar cases but was released on bond in July.

He is currently being held in custody as detectives process the case ahead of his arraignment in court, while investigations are also ongoing to trace the other gang members who remain at large.

The DCI has called on members of the public to continue reporting any suspicious activity to the police to aid in efforts of pursuing suspects linked to violent crimes.
