In a statement on Sunday, the National Police Service (NPS) acknowledged receiving a missing person report filed at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.
The social justice activist went missing on June 25, 2026, during commemorations marking the second anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z protests.
Activists and human rights defenders on Sunday issued the government a 24-hour ultimatum to produce Lichuma, failure to which they will result in street demonstrations on Tuesday.
Lichuma, a member of the Social Justice Centre, had attended the June 25 protests when he was reportedly picked up by unknown persons.
The Mathare community said that there are cases of at least three other missing individuals.
The NPS on Sunday said it had received a report on Lichuma’s disappearance, urging the public to report other missing persons.
“As a Service committed to accountability and transparency, we take these claims seriously. We therefore urge anyone with information or specific allegations of enforced disappearance, torture, or other human rights violations to report the matter immediately at the nearest police station,” said police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
