The County Government of Mombasa has advised the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital to evacuate its patients as the building next to Fayaz Bakery will undergo controlled demolition on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Iqbal Khandwalla, in a statement on Tuesday, noted that the facility is within the radius of the impact and hence it will be necessary to prioritise the patients' safety.

"We kindly request that all departments assist in ensuring a smooth and efficient evacuation process. Please coordinate with your teams to ensure that all patients are safely relocated and are provided with the necessary support during this transition," noted Dr. Khandwalla.

Patients have since been advised to seek medical services in three alternative hospitals during the affected period. These include Portreitz SC Hospitals, CGTRH Utange and CGTRH Outreaches.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as guided by the coordinating team," he added.

The operation to demolish the building will begin on Wednesday and is expected to take nearly 8 hours, as residents living nearby have been asked to vacate their houses in the area to allow a safe operation.

According to Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir, critically ill patients at Makadara Hospital will also be temporarily moved to nearby health facilities before the operation begins.

This as the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers have also been deployed to assist in an emergency response after the eleven-storey building located at Kilifi Corner began sinking, raising serious safety concerns for surrounding residential and commercial buildings.
