The National Assembly has approved the nomination of Dr. Duncan Ojwang Oburu as the new Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

Dr. Ojwang will succeed Justice Ahmed Issack Hassan, who relinquished the position on February 17, following his appointment as a Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya.

IPOA Vice Chairperson Anne Wanjiku Mwangi has since held the position on an interim basis.

During his approval hearing on August 12, 2026, Ojwang pledged to protect IPOA's independence, asserting that he would uphold it while executing its mandate.

“I believe I am courageous. I speak truth. Trust me with that responsibility. We will speak truth to power,” Ojwang told the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security.

President William Ruto nominated Dr. Ojwang for the position in July 2026 and forwarded his name to Parliament for consideration.

His nomination now awaits a formal communication by Speaker Moses Wetang'ula to President Ruto for official appointment and taking the oath of office.
