The owner of a five-storey building that collapsed in Ruiru Town, Kiambu County into the wee hours of Monday morning has been arrested, police have reported.

The building collapsed hours after more than 100 tenants were evacuated when cracks were seen on its pillars on Sunday afternoon.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, together with firefighters led the rescue operations after receiving reports on the danger from the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD.

“Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighbouring house that is supporting it, it could already be down,” Wamatangi said.

The building was the second one to collapse in Kiambu County after another five-storey building collapsed on November 17 in Ruaka, Kiambu County.

Two tenants lost their lives in the accident after the building fell on an adjacent home.

The owner of the building was also arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while attempting to leave the country.
