Color, confidence, and charm lit
up the stage last Thursday as Lions Nursery School hosted its much-anticipated
Little Mr. and Miss Lions Academy contest, drawing an impressive participation
of over 62 children in a vibrant celebration of talent and self-expression.
The event, now in its 12th year,
was the brainchild of the school’s principal, Maria Wanyonyi, who introduced
the pageant as an extracurricular activity aimed at nurturing confidence and
character among young learners.
Speaking during the event, she
reflected on her inspiration, drawn from her own experience as a university
beauty queen, and emphasized the importance of holistic child development
beyond academics.
“This program has transformed the
lives of over a thousand children who have passed through it,” she noted.
“We’ve seen remarkable growth in
confidence, communication skills, and character. It’s not just about the
crown—it’s about empowering the child.”
This year’s crown for Miss Lions
Nursery was awarded to five-year-old Aliana Wangui Gichuhi, whose radiant
personality and stage presence captured the hearts of judges and the audience
alike.
Described as bubbly, energetic,
and expressive, Aliana’s journey stood out as a powerful testament to the
program’s impact.
“Aliana was once very timid and
could hardly speak,” the principal shared. “Today, she stands tall, confident,
and full of life. It’s incredible to witness such transformation.”
Her parents echoed the pride and
joy of the moment. Her mother described her as “a happy, brilliant, and loving
go-getter,” while her father praised her as “obedient, bubbly, and full of
promise,” affirming their commitment to supporting her dreams.
Beyond the stage, Aliana continues
to hone her skills at Little Big Talents, where she trains during weekends and
school holidays to sharpen her speech and modeling abilities.
According to Ms. Wanyonyi, the
pageant aligns closely with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), focusing on
nurturing the whole child—socially, emotionally, and creatively—rather than
solely emphasizing academic performance.
“It’s time schools embraced
programs that are learner-centered,” she added. “We must give children the opportunity
to explore their strengths, build resilience, and express themselves
confidently.”
As the curtains fell on this
year’s colorful event, one message rang clear: when given the right platform,
every child has the potential to shine.
