Over 1,900 learners in Kajiado to benefit from borehole rehabilitation

More than 1,900 learners at Olekasasi Primary School in Kajiado North Constituency are set to benefit from the rehabilitation of the institution’s borehole, which is expected to ease water shortages and support agricultural activities.

The school, which has more than 1,500 learners, had previously relied on water vendors to meet its needs, particularly for sanitation and hygiene.

According to the State Department for Irrigation, the arrangement was costly and unsustainable, while the water shortage also affected the implementation of the 4-K Club programme under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho commissioned the rehabilitated borehole in Kajiado County, saying the facility will provide a reliable source of water for the school and the surrounding community.

“The project is therefore not only about providing water; it is about using water to transform learning, improve nutrition and equip young people with practical skills,” Kimotho said.

The rehabilitated borehole has enabled the school to undertake irrigated agriculture, with learners now cultivating mangoes, kales, spinach and tomatoes.

Kimotho said the farming activities will give learners practical, hands-on experience in agriculture while contributing to food and nutrition outcomes at the school.

The project was initiated after the school requested the State Department for Irrigation to rehabilitate the existing borehole to support domestic water needs, nutrition and agricultural activities.

The State Department said the facility is also expected to improve access to water for the surrounding community and support agricultural activities in the area.

The rehabilitation is expected to strengthen the implementation of the 4-K Club programme by providing learners with an opportunity to gain practical skills in irrigated agriculture.
