Over 17,000 packets of suspected counterfeit cigarettes seized in Thika

A multi-agency team led by Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has seized more than 17,000 packets of suspected counterfeit cigarettes during an operation in Thika, Kiambu County.

Speaking after inspecting the consignment, PS Muthoni said authorities are increasingly concerned about illicit tobacco products allegedly being smuggled into Kenya through neighbouring countries in violation of existing laws and regulations.

She urged cigarette manufacturers and importers to prioritise public health by ensuring all products released into the market comply with the country's safety and regulatory standards.

Investigations are underway to establish the authenticity of the seized cigarettes and identify those behind their distribution.

Muthoni said the products will be destroyed if laboratory tests confirm they are counterfeit.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched parallel investigations to determine whether the consignment complied with customs requirements, including payment of applicable taxes and the affixing of mandatory excise duty stamps.
