More than 1,000 farmers in Nyandarua County are set to benefit from a 500-acre irrigation project that the government says will boost agricultural production, improve food security and reduce reliance on rain-fed farming.
Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho said the Gwa
Kiongo Irrigation Project in Mirangine Ward, Ol Kalou, will be implemented in
two phases, with each phase bringing 250 acres under irrigation.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, Kimotho said
the irrigation scheme will provide farmers with reliable access to water
through an extensive piping network, enabling them to cultivate up to three
cropping seasons annually.
He said the project is expected to increase the production
of high-value crops, enhance household incomes and strengthen farmers'
resilience to the effects of climate change.
Kimotho pointed out that increased agricultural output would also
create opportunities for value addition, agro-processing and access to local,
regional and international markets, while contributing to the country's food
security agenda.
The inspection brought together officials from several
government departments, including Principal Secretary for the Blue Economy
Betsy Njagi, Principal Secretary for Energy Alex Wachira and former Senior
Economic Advisor Moses Kuria.
As part of efforts to diversify farmers' sources of income,
the team distributed 20,000 fish fingerlings and fish feeds to support
aquaculture around the dam.
According to the State Department for Irrigation, the
initiative is expected to create additional income opportunities, improve
household nutrition and generate employment, particularly for young people and
women.
Kimotho also revealed that the government has identified more than 150 former colonial dams across Nyandarua County for rehabilitation as part of efforts to expand water harvesting and storage infrastructure.
PS Kimotho noted that the programme will support irrigation development, livestock production, aquaculture and improve water availability for farming communities throughout the year.
The Principal Secretary said the government will continue
investing in irrigation infrastructure to enhance agricultural productivity,
strengthen food security and improve livelihoods.
Residents welcomed the project, saying the planned irrigation and dam rehabilitation programme would unlock the county's agricultural potential, create jobs and expand market opportunities for farmers.
