Rising Lionesses head coach Knight Otuoma says Kenya’s historic gold-medal triumph at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games is a sign of a bright future for women’s rugby.

Otuoma says the team had prepared well for the tournament, with tactical squad rotation during the pool stages aimed at keeping key players fresh for the knockout rounds.

“It’s been a tough tournament, but we had prepared well. I just told the girls to go in and have fun. This means that the future of rugby is bright,” she said.

The coach also explained that making four changes for Kenya’s earlier pool match against Australia was a deliberate move to rest players ahead of the semi-finals.

Captain Zain Mohammed says the team showed resilience after Australia took the lead in the second half, fighting back to force a 12-12 draw before clinching a 17-12 victory in sudden-death extra time.

“During the sudden death, we agreed we will go all in and get the gold. We have been dreaming of that gold while at home, and we had to get it,” noted Zain.

NOC-K Secretary General John Ogolla has described the achievement as a landmark moment for Kenyan and African sport, saying it demonstrates the continent’s talent and potential when given the necessary support.

“This win means a lot to us as a country, as Africa and as the Olympic movement fraternity in Kenya. This being the first Olympics in Africa, and with Kenya being the first country to win in a team sport on African soil, it shows we have the skill and talent,” said Ogolla.

He added that defeating Australia was no easy task, praising the players’ determination and expressing confidence that the triumph would inspire more African athletes.

“I believe now we are ready for the world. Even with future tournaments on African soil, more Africans will be motivated and Africa will keep on rising,” he said.
