Leaders allied to the United Opposition on Thursday visited Gikomba Market, where they criticised the government and Nairobi County over the demolition of structures at the country’s major second-hand clothes hub, vowing to pursue legal action and demanding compensation for affected traders.

The leaders — including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Attorney General Justin Muturi — addressed traders days after the demolition, with some alleging it was carried out at night and in disregard of court orders.

Gachagua claimed the demolition was aimed at displacing traders and alleged it was linked to land grabbing, insisting an opposition administration would reverse any such move.

“Kwanini unabomolea Gikomba traders usiku wa manane?” Gachagua posed, as he accused the government of targeting traders.

He further alleged that if land had been irregularly taken, it would be reclaimed.

“Kasongo ata ukiiba hii shamba sisi tukiingia serkali tutarudisha hiyo shamba,” he said, in remarks framed as allegations.

Kalonzo claimed a court order had been issued to stop the demolition but was ignored, saying the opposition would return to court.

“Tulienda kortini, korti ikatoa court order kusimamisha ubomozi Gikomba lakini Ruto haeshimu court order,” Kalonzo said.

Wamalwa said the opposition would pursue the matter in court and seek compensation for traders.

“Next week tuko kortini kupinga ubomoaji na kutaka compensation,” he said.

Muturi also faulted the government over what he described as disregard for court orders and said the law should apply equally.

“If it is about riparian issues… State House yenyewe imefika kwa mto. Aanzie State House,” he said.

The leaders also used the visit to rally traders politically ahead of the 2027 elections, urging them to register as voters and to reject leaders allied to the current administration.
