Ongwae backs Ochieng despite gaffe in Kizza wonder goal

The Kisii-based side endured a difficult afternoon as Nairobi United ended a five-match winless run emphatically. Despite the scoreline, much of the post-match discussion centered on a spectacular long-range strike by Ugandan left-back Mustafa Kizza, who sealed the victory in stunning style.
With Nairobi United already leading 2-0 and appearing in full control, Kizza spotted Ochieng off his line and unleashed an audacious left-footed effort from deep inside his own half. The ball sailed over the stranded goalkeeper, capping one of the season's most remarkable goals and underlining Nairobi United’s dominance on the day.
Ongwae, however, refused to single out his goalkeeper for blame. While acknowledging that Ochieng may have been out of position, the coach insisted the moment should instead highlight the brilliance of Kizza’s effort.
“Yes, my goalkeeper had moved too far from his area, but it is not right to blame him,” Ongwae said. “We should give credit to Mustafa Kizza for the wonderful goal. He noticed the goalkeeper was off position and took his chance. These things happen in football, and sometimes it is just unfortunate.”
Earlier in the match, goals from Dancan Omala and Michael Karamor in the first half had already put Shabana on the back foot. Nairobi United controlled proceedings and punished defensive lapses, leaving the visitors with little chance of a comeback.
The defeat marked Shabana’s fourth loss in their last five league matches, a worrying run of form that has increased pressure on the team as the season progresses.
Attention now shifts to the FKF Cup Round of 16, where Shabana will face non-league side Kuta Collections FC between April 11 and 12. The competition presents a fresh opportunity for the club, which is still chasing its first major trophy after consecutive Round of 16 exits in the past two years.
Ongwae remains optimistic ahead of the cup tie, emphasizing the need for improvement and focus. “Every match in the FKF Cup is like a final,” he said. “We will prepare well, correct our mistakes, and I believe we can bounce back strongly.”
