Former Commonwealth Games flyweight bronze medallist Christine Ongare will on Tuesday night face Eriven Berut of Turkey in a pre-quarter final match at the 13th World Women Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India.

Ongare, who is the 2017 African Championships bronze medallist registered Kenya’s second victory in the tournament’s history, after defeating Rahman Maganga of Tanzania in a round of 32 bout.

She is optimistic of stopping Berut, but knows the task ahead tonight is not easy.

"It has not been written anywhere that only a certain person can reach a certain level, there is not limitation whatsoever. Through faith, hard work and courage I believe I will qualify for the quarter finals.

“I still haven't achieved my goal, the day I will win gold outside Africa; I will have reached my target," said Ongare who is appearing for the third time in the prestigious championships.

On Wednesday, Kenyan captain and Africa Zone Three heavyweight gold medallist Elizabeth Andiego will take on Fariza Shotley of Kazakhstan in the light heavyweight category, after she was given a bye in the pre-quarterfinal matches.

The first victory by a Kenyan boxer at the championship was recorded by Nakuru-based boxer Mary Muthoni back in 2010 in Barbados.

Out of the 11 Kenyan boxers who travelled to India for the championship last week, only Ongare and Andiego are still in contention to progress.
