One person has died in Roysambu after being swept away by fast-moving flood waters as heavy rains continued to pound several parts of the country.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, in a statement on Wednesday, said the victim, an unidentified woman aged about 29 years, died in Zimmerman on Tuesday night as he warned of rising dam levels and heightened flood risks in downstream areas.
The woman is said to have been swept away near Turners Club.
“On April 28, 2026, at around 22:30 hours near Turners Club, an unknown female adult aged around 29 years was swept away by fast-moving rainwater following heavy rainfall. The victim drowned in a ditch and was retrieved by well-wishers but was already deceased at the time of rescue,” the statement read.
While extending condolences
to the victim’s family and others affected by the ongoing floods, Mwaura said
the body was moved to the Nairobi City Mortuary, awaiting identification and
post-mortem examination.
According to Mwaura, the Tuesday night rains left a trail of destruction across the City and other parts. The Street 13 bridge towards Mwiki in Kasarani was submerged by the Gatharaini River and rendered impassable. The Nairobi River was reported to be swollen, although it had not burst its banks.
He said 20
houses in Maanguo area, 60 in Maternity area and 30 in Muirigo area had also
been flooded.
At the same time,
Mwaura warned of possible flooding in Garissa County and Tana River County
after water levels surged in major dams along the Tana River cascade and urged
residents in low-lying regions to move to higher ground immediately.
Mwaura cautioned
that the developments had heightened the risk of flooding in downstream areas
and thus the need to take precautions.
“Residents in
low-lying areas, especially in Garissa and Tana River counties, are strongly
urged to move to higher ground immediately to protect lives and property,” he
stated.
He says Masinga Dam had reached full capacity as of Monday evening, prompting
controlled water releases.
“Kamburu, Gitaru and Kindaruma dams have been actively regulated to maintain safe operational levels. It is anticipated that Kiambere Dam will begin spilling within the next five days due to continued inflows,” Mwaura said.
The government urged Kenyans to remain vigilant as heavy rains are expected to continue in several parts of the country, reassuring them that the disaster response team led by the Kenya Defence Forces is actively managing the flooding situation in Kasarani.
