One of the two people who were shot dead during protests in Ishiara, Mbeere North Constituency in Embu County, has been laid to rest.

The family of Morris Mugo is demanding justice, including compensation for the 31-year-old who they describe as a social and hardworking young man killed by a police bullet while agitating for better healthcare.

A sombre mood engulfed St. Augustine Teachers’ College Church during the burial of Mugo, who was shot dead last week during protests over health services at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.

His family described the deceased as a breadwinner and a hardworking man who championed justice and good leadership

Laulenzia Muthoni, the deceased’s aunt, said: “We hold tightly to the beautiful memories you brought to us, the smiles, the conversations, the simple moments that we will miss every day. You are not just a son but a source of pride hope and unconditional love.”

Peterson Njeru, Mugo’s brother, added: “The brotherhood and what happened outside Ishiara Level 4 Hospital will forever remain a testimony.”

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku led a government delegation in condemning the killing, calling on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct thorough investigations.

Political leaders in Embu also condemned the incident, urging leaders to stop politicizing the protests that led to the death of two demonstrators.

“Tutahakikisha ya kwamba yule ambaye alifanya ile kitendo anaadhibiwa kwa wajibu wa sheria ya nchi yetu ya Kenya,” said CS Ruku.

Mbeere North MP Leo Wamuthende stated: “Mambo ya hawa polisi tumepeleka kwa IPOA na nanuia tukiwa na CS, Governor, Senator na viongozi wengine sisi tutafuatilia hatua kwa mwacheda.”

Leaders and mourners are also calling for improved services at Ishiara hospital to ensure residents continue to receive quality healthcare.
