Dennis Ombachi’s last minute try helped Kenya Sevens Rugby team qualify for the Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil next year.

The Mwamba star scored in the dying minutes of the match against resurgent Zimbabwe side at Barnard Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday to put the score at 21-19 in favour of Kenya.

The Shujaa team began their campaign on a high beating Mauritius 50-5, before seeing off Senegal 27-0 in the preliminary matches on Saturday.

Kenya then went ahead to beat Madagascar 41-0 in the quarter finals before seeing off Tunisia 42-12 in the semis to qualify for the finals against Zimbabwe.

Kenya now joins Springbok Sevens who qualified for the Rio Olympics 2016 by finishing second on the log table at the conclusion of the 2014/2015 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

On the road to the final, Zimbabwe beat Nigeria 31-12 before thrashing Zambia and Uganda 48-0 and 43-0 respectively.

Other Kenyan teams who have qualified for the Olympics are the women volleyball team and men’s hockey team.
