The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has insisted that any talks between the party and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the next General Election must be based on a 50-50 power-sharing formula.

Dr. Oburu said the anticipated negotiations between the two parties would provide an opportunity to discuss key issues, including the presidency.

“When we form a coalition agreement with UDA, it will be based on a 50-50 share, making us stronger. We will even negotiate on the presidency; we will not leave any seat unnegotiated,” he said.

At the same time, the Siaya Senator urged ODM leaders to put aside their differences and work together, a call that comes at a time when the party is experiencing internal divisions.

The ODM leader was speaking during a meeting with a group of politicians from Taita Taveta County who had visited him to seek solutions to challenges affecting the region.

The delegation from Taita Taveta claimed, in Oburu’s presence, that the county’s Senator, Johnes Mwaruma, was promoting divisive politics and creating divisions among residents. Mwaruma, however, stated that he was ready to change course for the benefit of all.

“Ata kama mko na tofauti kidogo, please just tolerate him, just give him a chance to say his bit. Because he is one of us, and if he has made a mistake, let us correct the mistake,” said Dr. Oburu.

Oburu was accompanied by Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, and Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron, who echoed the call for unity within ODM, saying it would strengthen the party’s position in any negotiations with the ruling UDA party.

“Claims that the broad-based arrangement is not favouring ODM stem from a lack of unity within the party. We have challenges arising from nominations across the country, but we must find a lasting solution as soon as possible before the party leader begins negotiations with UDA,” said Ruth Odinga.
