A day after the widow of the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader, Raila Odinga, Mama Ida Odinga, called for a truce within the ODM party, a section of ODM leaders led by the party’s Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, held meetings in Nairobi to seek an end to the current crisis.
Some of those who met say ODM is preparing to position itself as a strong opposition party next year, field its own presidential candidate, and restore unity within the party.
“Raila ran ODM on the principle of constant consultation. It’s
my wish that we can preserve the party as a matter of service to our country,”
Mama Ida Odinga had said.
“It doesn’t matter how badly you insulted me; I am prepared
to sit down and talk to any ODM member,’ Sifuna stated.
Images circulating on social media show the
Sifuna-Orengo–led faction at a meeting. Among those present at the meeting were
13 leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James
Orengo, and Members of Parliament Millie Odhiambo, Babu Owino, and Ruth Odinga.
Sifuna tweeted: “Sit. Talk. Tumeanza,” and listed the
attendance, hinting at heeding the call by Dr Ida Odinga.
“We want ODM to call for NDC. It’s time to take over the
party leadership,” Embakasi East
MP Babu Owino stated.
Former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo, who was also present, says
some of the discussions centred on plans for the 2027 politics, including the
convening of a National Delegates Convention (NDC) in the near future and the
party’s resolve to field its own presidential candidate.
“ODM is a big party. We must have our own ODM presidential
candidate,” Ndolo said.
He adds that they agreed the party will also conduct
nominations to give all members interested in flying the party’s flag next year
a fair and free opportunity to compete.
“Orengo, Sifuna and Ruth Odinga have declared their interest
in being ODM’s flag bearer. Others, including Joho, should also undergo
nominations so that we can have one presidential candidate,” Ndolo added.
The meeting comes amid intensified efforts to steady the
Orange party, which has faced internal turbulence following blame games over
Raila Odinga’s loss in the 2022 General Election.
