The Orange
Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has told off critics
opposed to the ongoing protest victim compensation exercise, calling on them
not to deter the beneficiaries of the scheme.
The party boss warned
leaders politicising the matter, urging them to keep off and let the victims be
compensated.
The Siaya Senator,
who was speaking while receiving the status update report, told the victims
affected by the past protests as a result of police brutality to continue
coming out for the token awarded by the government.
He said he will
push and lobby to ensure all the claimants affected are considered.
Dr. Oburu hailed
the Kenya Kwanza administration for taking the steps to actualize one of the
10-point agendas to honor the victims who suffered brutality.
“You cannot
compensate life, it is just a matter of recognizing that these people played a
big role in the liberation of our country against oppression. That is why today
is important to us. As ODM, we have borne the brunt of the struggle for justice
for our country, and we’re not about to abandon that struggle,” he said.
“That is why our
late leader Raila Odinga talked to the President, and one of the important
agenda Raila gave them was to pursue the 10-point agenda implementation. We
hope that our people who lost their lives and who were sexually assaulted,
injured, hospitalized come out so that this process is completed.”
Dr. Oburu added: “Let
us not prevent those who suffered from receiving the token. Let us take the
token and then we’ll demand more…the government has recognized that there were
some wrongs done to Kenyans and has agreed to budget for compensation.”
At the same time, Dr.
Oburu weighed in on the protest slated for Thursday, urging Kenyans to embrace
peaceful protest devoid of violence to avert more deaths and damage.
