Nyamira residents demand justice after 24-year-old dies in police custody

Residents of Iranya in Kitutu Masaba Constituency, Nyamira County, have held peaceful demonstrations demanding justice following the death of a 24-year-old man in police custody in Narumoru.

Dennis Oremo Osiemo was reportedly arrested by officers from Narumoru Police Station, who later claimed that they found him hanging inside a cell.

According to his family, Dennis had been working on a farm in Narumoru when he was arrested over allegations of assaulting his employer.

While police are said to have indicated that Dennis died by suicide using a piece of mattress cover in the cell, his family has rejected the account, demanding an independent investigation into what happened.

They are appealing to the Inspector General of Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
