Nurses Praise Midwives for Increase in Skilled Birth Rate

According to the council’s chair, Evelyn Rotich, most of the antenatal care, birth, normal labour and postnatal care is usually provided by midwives, hence the good up-take of skilled birth attendance.
While acknowledging the government’s provision of free maternal healthcare services and first lady Margaret Kenyatta’s beyond zero campaign initiative, Rotich, however, noted that they face challenges, given the over-whelming number of patients they receive at the hospitals.
On her part, the nurse in charge of reproductive health department at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nereah Ojanga, stated that the initiatives have significantly helped in reducing maternal and neo-natal mortality rates across the country.
The nurses were speaking during celebrations to mark this year’s International Midwives Week at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Siaya Campus.
